Football 10/21/05 . . .
Xenia
20 - Beavercreek 15
Another rainy Friday night of football
for Beavercreek, this time at Xenia with the Backyard Battle trophy
as the prize. Since winning the battle in 2000, the Beavers
have endured some nasty defeats, but this year the teams were evenly
matched.
Both teams had trouble getting started
in the first quarter. First both traded
possession on downs and then traded
possessions with punts. Creek started the final possession of
the quarter on the Xenia 45 yard line. The offense converted
on 4th and 1 with a Jack Jones run and then achieved first downs on
a Xenia penalty and a Dee Wallace run. The quarter ended
with 3rd and 1 on the Xenia six yard line and a 0-0 score.
Creek momentum continued and Wallace
scored on a 6 yard run. The offense added a Wallace 2 point
conversion for a temporary 8-0 lead. A good Xenia runback on
the kickoff gave the Buccaneers the ball at the Creek 40 yard line
where they continued to the endzone and a 2 point pass conversion to
tie the game. Both defenses
continued solid play and the teams traded possessions until the half
with the score tied 8-8.

Xenia offense scored their first
possession in the third and fourth quarter but failed to convert
their extra point and two-point attempts and held a 20-8 lead.
Creek's first fourth quarter possession was handicapped by multiple
Creek penalties. The Beaver punt, however, pinned Xenia on
their 1 yard line and the relentless Beaver defense forced a
Buccaneer punt from 7 yard line. Eric Hill received the punt
and handed the ball to Dee Wallace who carried the ball to Xenia's
12 yard line. Wallace then scored on an 11 yard run and Pat
Williams added the extra point to bring the game score to 20-15.
Creek defense forced a Xenia punt on their next possession and the
Beavers started their final drive from Creek's 29 yard line with
time running down. Third and nine on the Xenia 29, 32 seconds
left, and an incomplete pass led to Creek turning the ball over on
downs and the Buccaneers escaped with a win.
Dee Wallace had 96 rushing and 10
passing yards for the evening, Jack Jones added 54 rushing and 7
passing. Avid Pureval had a great night, averaging over 40
yards per punt. Pat Williams averaged 37 yards per kickoff.
